LYIT opens Wind Energy Centre at the Killybegs Campus
The Minister in his opening address stressed the need to continue the development of the Green Economy. He praised the work of all of the public service bodies and congratulated them on working in such a positive and responsive manner to the needs of industry, which was clearly evident from the attendance at the opening. The Green Economy is one of the Donegal County Development Board’s (CDB) priority objectives. In December 2009, the Donegal CDB Board unanimously supported the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Renewable Technology at the LYIT campus. The opening of the Wind Energy Centre at the Killybegs Campus of LYIT is a first step in the realisation of this vision. This vision is part of an integrated approach, comprising members from LYIT, Donegal County Council, FÁS, Údarás na Gaeltachta and Donegal VEC – collectively known as the Education and Training Consortium for Renewable Technology of the CDB. Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) is the first college in Ireland to offer a Wind Energy Technician programme with BZEE accreditation.
The 27m training tower is the first and only such facility in Ireland. The 700m2 workshop space gives our students the opportunity to work on mid-sized turbines and blades; Learning skills to make the future brighter for their families and our country. LYIT has recently been approved as a Vertical Rescue College of Skylotec Gmbh and we will be announcing further accreditation and accolades from industry in the near future.
